Emily Speer, MD

Dr. Speer was born in California before living in Alberta, Canada for 10 years, then settling in Illinois. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Integrative Physiology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. She then earned her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. Wanting to be close to the Colorado Rockies, Dr. Speer completed a general surgery residency at University of Colorado.

Wanting to make an impact in the world, Dr. Speer was originally on the forestry path. While studying abroad in Ireland in college, she began taking her general science courses that were required by her major. It was when she took her first anatomy class that she realized she could make an impact in a different way - by becoming a surgeon. She loved the idea that surgery can make a huge difference in a short amount of time and can get people back to their lives relatively quickly.

Dr. Speer believes that there are many ways to approach surgery. Giving patients all the information in order to make educated decisions is something that she strives for each and every day.

“Patient satisfaction and safety are at the core of my decision-making, and I strive to provide the very best and most compassionate care to each patient by individually tailoring treatment plans to fit each person’s needs. I am able to provide patients with the education they need to make informed treatment decisions in order to provide them with superior surgical care in the least invasive way possible.”

While Dr. Speer is trained in all areas of general surgery, as a fellowship-trained Foregut and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, her areas of clinical interest include:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

  • Esophageal disorders

  • Hiatal hernias

  • Gastroparesis

  • Morbid obesity

When she is not at work, Dr. Speer enjoys outdoor activities such as skiing and hiking with her husband and two children.
